Scott's legal professional life, commencing from his graduation from Duke University School of Law, has been devoted to the practice of communications law. Scott is well known for his representation of mass media clients, including radio and television station owners, broadcast networks and satellite program distributors, as well as universities and cities with respect to telecommunications needs and funding. Scott also represents equipment manufacturers and companies which develop communications tower sites. Scott likewise has experience in international radio and television and other international activities.

He speaks frequently at radio and television broadcast conventions and seminars, including meetings throughout the country of state broadcast associations and national conventions of the National Association of Broadcasters. Scott is legal counsel to the Alabama Broadcasters Association and the South Carolina Broadcast Association.

In recognition of his contributions as legal counsel to the Alabama Broadcasters Association, he was named "Broadcaster of the Year." Scott has also been named to the Alabama broadcasting "Hall of Fame." He is currently on the Board of Visitors of the University of Alabama School of Communications and Information Sciences.

Scott was active over many years in preservation of the Appalachian Trail, a 2000 mile foot-path traversing from Georgia to Maine. He is past President of the well known Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, and was a Board Member of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, which coordinates management of and helps preserve the AT. In the 1970s, he assisted with others at the Conservancy in helping protect the Appalachian Trail and subsequent needed Congressional appropriations. Scott is a past member of the University of Colorado parents association board which addressed a variety of University issues in conjunction with the University's administration. In 1995, Scott was awarded the James H. Douglas, Jr. Award by Gardner, Carton & Douglas in recognition of activities over time exemplifying service to the community and nation through military service and participation in community, educational, artistic, and charitable activities.

Scott received his undergraduate degree from Birmingham-Southern College, and his law degree from Duke University School of Law. He is admitted to the Bars of the U.S. Supreme Court, and various other federal courts, and to practice in the District of Columbia and Alabama.
